Bolnišnica Franja Dolenji Novaki
Built in the remote gorge of Pasica in western Slovenia in difficult and rugged terrain, the hospital opened in December 1943 and saw continuous improvements until May 1945. The hospital was located deep inside the German-occupied Europe, only a few hours from Austria and the central parts of the Third Reich.
When the bearers came, they blindfolded us and carried us away.
The path to the hospital was not short. In several places they could barely carry us, gasped for breath, sometimes lifting the stretchers in front and other times in back.
They walked quietly, here and there someone spoke in low tones: hold it … slowly … watch out … They waded through water.
Where on earth are they taking us, I thought. The path never seemed to end, I was dizzy from the steady swaying. Exhausted and feeble. I was losing blood…
